SYMPTOMS OF UTERINE PUS IN CATS AND METHODS OF TREATMENT

Companion Clinic

What is uterine pus in cats and how does it happen?

Biometra, or uterine pus in cats, is an infection that occurs in the uterus, and is considered a life-threatening situation for cats, so it must be dealt with quickly and definitively.

Doctors describe cat uterine pus as a secondary infection caused by hormonal changes in the cat's reproductive system.

In the event of infection, you must intervene quickly, whether for treatment or hysterectomy, because neglecting the condition may lead to the death of your cat in a few days.

How does uterine pus occur in cats?

Usually after the estrous cycle in cats ends, the level of progesterone in the blood increases and remains at high levels for weeks as the hormone progesterone stimulates the thickening of the lining of the uterus to prepare for pregnancy.

In the event that cats do not become pregnant several times, the increase in the thickness of the lining of the uterus stimulates the secretion of fluids that help the growth of bacteria, and with the increase in the proportion of progesterone, the uterus will not contract to excrete these fluids, and thus infection occurs.

Another reason for the occurrence of uterine pus in cats is that during the mating cycle in cats, the white blood cells will not enter the uterus, so as not to attack the sperm of the male cats that enter the uterus for fertilization and pregnancy.

It is also for this reason that the chances of a bacterial infection increase in a very large way during this period.

Also, medicines that contain some hormones - such as contraceptive injections for cats - cause this infection, as they contain different hormones that cause some hormonal imbalance that causes an increase in the concentration of progesterone.

And thus may cause the occurrence of uterine pus in cats “Pyometra”. Therefore, cats must be carefully monitored when giving them any medicines that contain hormones.

Symptoms of uterine pus in cats and methods of treatment

The severity of symptoms depends on the vaginal opening, as the vaginal opening controls the appearance of secretions outside the body, but if the vaginal opening is closed, fluids will be trapped inside the body and cause other symptoms.

Because cats love cleanliness, you may not notice the secretions that come out of them because they constantly lick themselves and clean themselves. You will notice the problem after it worsens and the cat stops cleaning itself.

In the event that the vagina is closed, the abdomen swells due to the retention of pus inside the uterus. Unfortunately, in this case, the toxins will spread

In any case, you will notice some symptoms as follows:

  • Anorexia

  • Drinking a lot of water

  • Appearance of signs of illness in the cat

  • Move hard and hide

  • Vaginal secretions (in case the vagina is open

Uterine pus in cats after birth

There is one type of bacterial infection in cats called “Metritis” that occurs immediately after birth.

Infection occurs within a week of the birth of kittens, as after the cat gives birth, some inflammation occurs in the lining of the uterus. This bacterial infection also causes uterine pus.

There is no difference here if the birth was natural or cesarean, and it may also occur after abortion for cats.

Symptoms of this infection are as follows:

  • Purulent discharge from the vagina of cats after birth with a pungent odor.

  • Bloody secretions or sporadic drops of blood coming out of the vaginal opening of the cat after birth.

  • Significant bloating of the stomach for no reason.

  • The appearance of dryness on the skin.

  • The gums will turn a dark pink.

  • Fever and high temperature.

  • Lack of milk secretion and neglect of kittens.

  • The best treatment for uterine pus in cats is surgical removal of the uterus when the infection appears.

  • The process of sterilizing female cats is the best solution, whether before the infection appears or after it appears so that the symptoms do not worsen.. Read: Calming cats in the mating season

  • The earlier the problem is detected, the more simple and easy the treatment will be, and the surgical intervention will take place without any significant problems.

  • In the event that the cats were suffering from symptoms of severe infection before the operation, they may need a period of one or two weeks to recover.

  • There are some other hormonal treatments that focus on reducing the level of progesterone in the blood, but there are some significant risks surrounding this method of treatment, so we do not always recommend it.
